Steps Toward Salvation

The Bible lists several steps toward salvation using the Greek preposition eis, which means “unto” or toward:

• Belief unto (eis) righteousness (Rom. 10:10)
• Repentance unto (eis) life (Acts 11:18)
• Confession unto (eis) salvation (Rom. 10:10)

However, notice that when it comes to baptism, eis is translated as “into”:

• Baptized in/into (eis) the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19)
• Baptized into (eis) Jesus Christ (Rom. 6:3)
• Baptized into (eis) one body (1 Cor. 12:13)
• Baptized into (eis) Christ (Gal. 3:27)

Belief, repentance, and confession are all steps “unto” (toward) salvation, but water baptism is the final step “into” Christ, where salvation is found (2 Tim. 2:10; Acts 22:16; Eph. 5:26; Col. 2:11-13; 1 Pet. 3:20-21). Peter’s command to “Repent and be baptized… for (eis) the forgiveness of sins” confirms this fact (Acts 2:38-41).
