The Truth May Seem Strange at First

Just because simple New Testament Christianity may seem “strange” to you, that does not mean you should reject it.

When Christ’s church first began, it was new and unfamiliar to everybody. It did not match the Jewish traditions or the pagan practices people had followed for centuries. However, when they realized the Truth, they did not let unfamiliarity stop them. They made the necessary changes and became part of it. That is what God expected then, and that is still what He expects today.

If New Testament Christianity seems strange to you, don’t dismiss it—investigate it. If you find that it is the Truth (which it is), hold to it with all your being. Be an active part of it, and make it who you are every day—a faithful follower of Christ (Luke 9:23; John 8:31-32; Romans 12:1–2).

Being saved through obedience to the Gospel—believing in Christ, repenting, confessing your belief in Him to men, and being immersed into Christ (Matthew 10:32; Acts 2:36–41, 47; 8:37; 22:16)—is just the beginning. It is the new birth of water and Spirit (John 3:5; 6:63; Romans 6:3–5; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 5:25–26; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:22–23). Faithfulness must follow conversion, which includes regularly assembling with other New Testament Christians—members of the Lord’s church—and worshiping according to God’s instructions (Matthew 16:18; John 4:23-24; Acts 2:47; 20:28; Romans 16:16–17; Colossians 3:17; Hebrews 10:23–31; Revelation 2:10).

Yes, that first century worship may seem unusual to some, with no instruments and weekly Lord’s Supper—the simple pattern found in God’s Word. However, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23–24; 1 Samuel 15:22). We must worship with the right heart and by the right standard—the New Testament Scriptures. The Old Testament is still there for our learning (Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11), but Christ’s death ushered in a New Covenant with a New Law and a new system of worship (John 4:19–24; Hebrews 7:12; 9:15–17; 10:8–9).

Don’t let what seems “strange” at first keep you from salvation and worship that pleases God. What may seem unfamiliar in the beginning will become precious when you realize it is the Truth.
